Cloze Exercise (Fill in Exercise/Gap-filling Exercise) ...

  • The test constructor chooses where the gaps in the text should be.
  • The exercise is used to test comprehension of a certain topic: e.g. a specific field of grammar or vocabulary, listening.
  • One or several answers can be written in the gap.
  • Give feedback which tells the student where the error is located.
  • A Cloze exercise should be written as a paragraph.
  • A Cloze test is a gap-filling task, where words are deleted at fixed stages.
  • The more gaps the more difficult it is to do (as a rule: do not replace more than every 5th or 9th word).
  • Do not delete proper names if you use the cloze as a listening comprehension activity.
  • A Cloze exercise helps students to practise reading strategies (as students read and encounter the blanks in the passage, they use various sources of information and reading strategies to decide what word makes sense in the blank).
  • A true Cloze is one with every fifth or tenth word deleted, or specific words like verbs, prepositions or special vocabulary can be deleted.

There are two types of making cloze exercises:
    1) Provide a list of choices for each cloze field.
    2) Make a blank cloze field and ask students to complete the sentences.
